I recently bought my first firearm =) I've had my licence since I was 16 so I thought it was time xD<br />
<br />
I went hunting with a friend on her property and staked out a large warren, to which I was the only one to successfully take a bunny, they went to ground as soon as the the .17 HMR (Hornady Magnum Rimfire) wet off and their comrade was shot. It does some serious damage, as it blew a sizable hole in my prize. I managed to skin it and save some of the hide to tan later =D But the meat was spoiled thanks to not taking the head :/<br />

Long time no post I know, I've been off my feet with chest infections and a couple nasty knee injuries. But I'm back!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
During my convalescence I gradually acquired nine Zebra Finches (four pairs and a spare cock as hens are difficult to find in my region at the moment) which set me off on a long lost hobby. I had kept finches many years ago, even attempting to breed Gouldian Finches when I was in primary school (which did not end well as my breeding pairs kept dying due to being bad stock from bad breeders. And loosing a Gouldian Finch when you're in primary school is not a cheap thing to have happen), but gave it up as my birds died I didn't replenish my stock.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
But for some reason I just started up again, buying or being given birds I liked. As I built up my Zebra Finch collection I started converting our old sun deck, which is fully enclosed, into somewhat of a bird room (it was going to be half bird room, half fish room but I decided to make it all birds and move my fish into the sealed garage under me) and this is the results so far:</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="320" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/E7oYVNmf7MQ?rel=0" width="480"></iframe></div>
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span>
<span style="text-align: left;">My Zebra Finches have begun to breed, having nine babies so far. I had a friend who breeds Budgies help me band the first clutch and I banded the second, and man it's difficult putting something so small onto something so small! This is my first ever fledgling:</span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="320" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/kl4aBXbNpMA?rel=0" style="text-align: center;" width="480"></iframe></div>
<br />
I have also added to the collection, as you can see from the video. From my original nine Zebra Finches I purchased my Bourke's Parrot first, my first non-finch in quite a long time, and have been searching for a Rosa hen for him ever since. Then I got my Elegant Parrot. I had walked into the only pet store that deals in Marine fish and good quality birds (including licensed birds) in Tamworth, <a href="http://www.macawsomepets.com.au/" target="_blank">Macawsome Pets</a>, and spotted a Lutino Elegant hen with a split male. I immediately asked how much but had been beaten to the punch as a fellow aviculture enthusiast (who seems to have esp in regards to when new birds arrive) had bought them the previous day. I grabbed the last one they had, who was a rather nice looking cock, and went on my merry way. After that I bought a pair of Orange-Breasted Waxbills (boy are they cute... and tiny, very tiny!), handraised Eclectus hen (named Charlotte) and a handraised Masked Lovebird.<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
That Lovebird set me onto the next part of my collection: Lovebirds! I got Macawsome Pets to hold an Albino and Violet Masked Lovebird until I had my breeding cabinets built. Well this took me a while to even get one made and by then they had gotten a pair of hybrids in, a Masked x Fischer's cross. I had been going to get a pair of Peach Faced Lovebirds but opted for the hybrids as they were gorgeous. I plan to further develop them and am currently waiting for their first clutch so as I can build up a breeding program for them. I'll be DNA sexing the Violet and Albino birds and am hoping that they are a cock and hen pair as I want to pair them up.<br />
<br />
And if that isn't enough I recently bought two pairs of Gouldian Finches, with the two hens being split to <a href="http://www.gouldianfinch.com.au/australian_yellow_gouldian_finch.htm" target="_blank">Australian Yellow</a>! One of the hens is of breeding age, while the other is of this years nest so will take some time to mature. My cocks are normal Red Headed Gouldians so I won't throw any Australia Yellows but I mainly just want to see if the hens'll breed and if they do I'll use the money I get from the chicks to find two Aussie Yellow cocks. I also have on hold a Lutino Masked Lovebird hen! and a yet unknown mutation and sex yellow Masked Lovebird.<br />
<br />
All in all I have the beginnings of a rather nice bird collection and I'm loving it!</div>

Good news everybody! ^_^ Today I found a brilliant Android app called "SDR Touch": <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=marto.androsdr2">https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=marto.androsdr2</a>, which when combined with the following RTL2832U driver: <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=marto.rtl_tcp_andro">https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=marto.rtl_tcp_andro</a>, USB OTG cable: <a href="http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-OTG-USB-Cable-Adapter-for-Samsung-Galaxy-S-3-S-III-i9300-S2-i9100-/310422121131">http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-OTG-USB-Cable-Adapter-for-Samsung-Galaxy-S-3-S-III-i9300-S2-i9100-/310422121131</a> and USB TV dongle: <a href="http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DVB-T-T-Stick-SDR-FM-DAB-Tuner-Receiver-Stick-Realtek-RTL2832U-E4000-/370677800882">http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DVB-T-T-Stick-SDR-FM-DAB-Tuner-Receiver-Stick-Realtek-RTL2832U-E4000-/370677800882</a> you can have a portable radio scanner! The USB TV dongle I linked to should get a working range from 50MHz to 2200 MHz (200 MHz shy of 2.4GHz). But you could always get an upconverter to play with (such as the <a href="http://www.nooelec.com/store/software-defined-radio/ham-it-up-v1-0-rf-upconverter-for-software-defined-radio.html" target="_blank">Ham It Up</a>).<br />
<br />
It should work, from my understanding, but I'm just going to have to test it out! =3<br />
<br />
The only drawback for those out there with older Android phones is that it needs a rooted phone if your version of Android is older than 3.1, but for those of us with newer phones running newer versions then we're all set =D You'll also probably need to run a powered USB hub to supply the TV dongle with power, but you should be able to hook the hub up to a battery pack thus still making it all portable =DAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05668936809681675189noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8582950046931132176.post-30243277630594190972012-11-26T00:04:00.000-08:002012-11-27T15:14:17.609-08:00Vonrakohunde D Parker - Six Generations<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZtihjuLDRcxFsfY1Lpfn8a2S8zMATJv6EL7WtpZF8v-BT-CrWcn-rC7l4AaGZNjUXO1C4hxGDa3kBEKoonARxVf57KLdoeez_zqXnV9HWa9zggUTlWTO4FntLEdBs8A_JFS_t8e09knUZ/s1600/safe_image.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZtihjuLDRcxFsfY1Lpfn8a2S8zMATJv6EL7WtpZF8v-BT-CrWcn-rC7l4AaGZNjUXO1C4hxGDa3kBEKoonARxVf57KLdoeez_zqXnV9HWa9zggUTlWTO4FntLEdBs8A_JFS_t8e09knUZ/s320/safe_image.jpg" width="111" /></a></div>
So, if you're into nano reef aquariums you may be familiar with the need to paint the rear of your tank black (or blue if that's your thing) to hide your filtration equipment and to make the tank look sharper.<br />
<br />
Now, if you're like me and are Australian and also happen to live in a regional area then you may find it difficult to find the paint of choice for most of the community: Krylon Fusion for Plastic. It seems that it's the go-to paint for the American enthusiast and as such you run into flat recommendations of "Wal-Mart carries it", which doesn't really help you.<br />
<br />
So after some searching I discovered that <a href="https://www.crockerspaint.com/" target="_blank">Crockers Paint</a> stocks it and that they take online orders! I just bought a couple cans of the <a href="http://www.crockerspaint.com/newshop/products/5909/Krylon_Fusion_Black_Flat_251.html" target="_blank">Flat Black</a> for $12.95 a can and it cost me around $18.80 in shipping, which is a small price to pay when you have no other options xD<br />
<br />
As soon as I get them into my hot little hands two of my work-in-progress tanks will have nice and black backs which will let me get on with the rest of setting them up.<br />
<br />
<h4>
!!UPDATE!!</h4>
<div>
<br /></div>
They arrived today:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibujjuvQU0rjexrqS4rAgjTNYhZZIbFYHMzULArjHYyaW_5ULr2LUXWarx5MuLEhT9bmM1mgnBBPgK6lYNlzUH8CDQjdBfhvfAlZI1X-36WKmKkp8DX8Tzt8_tSFW7gvKb2aYD4XNtOpFt/s1600/52738_10151237875578903_325883483_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibujjuvQU0rjexrqS4rAgjTNYhZZIbFYHMzULArjHYyaW_5ULr2LUXWarx5MuLEhT9bmM1mgnBBPgK6lYNlzUH8CDQjdBfhvfAlZI1X-36WKmKkp8DX8Tzt8_tSFW7gvKb2aYD4XNtOpFt/s320/52738_10151237875578903_325883483_o.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
They were stated as being posted on the 09/11/2012 and today is the 12th, so pretty nice timing. I'll be taping and painting my 43 litre Mirage 50 tomorrow, after I finish work. Then I just need to get my AquaClear 70 (with an inTank media basket), AquaC Nano Remora, Hydor Theo 50w heater, Hydor Koralia Nano 900 and some live rock and sand and she'll be on her way to being my first nano reef ^_^Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05668936809681675189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8582950046931132176.post-10500613547813332562012-11-05T19:11:00.000-08:002012-11-05T19:11:04.382-08:00My DIY Pico Protein Skimmer... I hope<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi80xYN96wg7kWlDTyfhZpvO7i999Gvk7w7Ayji40GTVjFfQpBtE9bHXrr4udNHvJ-UdKXSpwHTJOekM4UwpXFKcSa2kLfym_On5siiv_oxIUw6QmLpH-m9plOFvMlN9Q7Zl-vi3WSNLBru/s1600/20121106_133032.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi80xYN96wg7kWlDTyfhZpvO7i999Gvk7w7Ayji40GTVjFfQpBtE9bHXrr4udNHvJ-UdKXSpwHTJOekM4UwpXFKcSa2kLfym_On5siiv_oxIUw6QmLpH-m9plOFvMlN9Q7Zl-vi3WSNLBru/s320/20121106_133032.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
This is my first attempt at a pico protein skimmer for my All-in-One AquaOne Cube30 build.<br />
<br />
It's 27.9 cm (11") from tip to tail and is made from 32mm (1.25") PVC. The top is cut at a 45° angle using a mitre box and I'll be drilling a 10mm hole at the top and back of the pipe to attach some 10mm vinyl tubing that'll lead to the collection cup (or jar). I still need to work out a mounting bracket. I was thinking lasercut acrylic, cut out of the excess that is on the sheet from making my AIO back.<br />
<br />
It's based on the <a href="http://reefbuilders.com/2011/03/07/glazer-pico-skimmer/" target="_blank">pico skimmer made by Glazer</a> (only a little less fancy as it's not acrylic). Not sure if it's going to work but I won't know until I get my tank up and running!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05668936809681675189noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8582950046931132176.post-92214954691999681302012-11-03T01:42:00.000-07:002012-11-06T23:31:54.919-08:00The Pico Display RefugiumI'm at it again it seems.<br />
<br />
My AquaOne Cube 30 Pico Reef build is coming along nicely; it's had a few revisements and merging of suggestions from kind nano-reef.com-ers. One such suggestion was throwing a submersible light and some chaeto into the first compartment. I liked this idea but incorporating it made it look a little off.<br />
<br />
That's when I decided to be all creative and build a little display refugium to sit next to the pico reef. This way I'll get to see my macroalgae grow and also add extra filtration potential to the tank.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqvUMzdva46Jo0scRYPQKwDzgHGtNgMoIBEYM-R2ZipQut6SKMZHIShVUwLYtYtEg1rIM87Or0MQNdNBtEsr2lsqn94yaTiNf3v98qBnL1sm9envJ5M41qj5okXYkpRDvubBqfNGAtSTwI/s1600/Pico+Refugium+-+04.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="127" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqvUMzdva46Jo0scRYPQKwDzgHGtNgMoIBEYM-R2ZipQut6SKMZHIShVUwLYtYtEg1rIM87Or0MQNdNBtEsr2lsqn94yaTiNf3v98qBnL1sm9envJ5M41qj5okXYkpRDvubBqfNGAtSTwI/s320/Pico+Refugium+-+04.PNG" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The above image is my first attempt at a design. It's based around <a href="http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=257876&view=findpost&p=3154572" target="_blank">this</a> design. In case of power outage there is going to be a couple PVC overflows in the main part of the tank and be plumbed to a collection resevoir underneath the tanks.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The tank measure 70cm (L) x 27cm (W) x 23cm (D) and holds 43 litres (11.3 gallons). The actual refugium chamber is 51.9cm (L) x 27cm (W) x 23cm (D) and holds 32 litres (8.4 gallons).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The tank will be all glass, 4mm. The baffling will be made from 6mm clear acrylic and the black parts in the first image represent what will be hidden by a nice stained timber cabinet (which will be incorporated into the cabinet of the AIO AquaOne Cube 30 pico I'm building).</div>
<br />
At the moment I have ordered the following for lighting the fuge:<br />
<br />
1 x 3w Cool White (6000-6500K)<br />
2 x 3w Warm White (3000-3300K)<br />
1 x 4w Neutral White (3700-5000K)<br />
1 x 3w Blue (460-465nm)
<br />
<br />
I also got:<br />
<br />
10 x 1w Red (620-630nm) - Only need three<br />
<br />
Which I'll be soldering into the Coo and Neutral White bulbs:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifwYByoZowYdwLV-luMXnZVPNpb7jVrgiveI43Tl6-hgnepoK1rhdsRYUbOi1AJDFfS2WMVdD8hVW6kfnjFDfjk7aTToXXLoJXllb7LdppmEZbxkMBTRvvo0mbWCqZohIwqLSXjWw3zoW9/s1600/fuge_light.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="123" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifwYByoZowYdwLV-luMXnZVPNpb7jVrgiveI43Tl6-hgnepoK1rhdsRYUbOi1AJDFfS2WMVdD8hVW6kfnjFDfjk7aTToXXLoJXllb7LdppmEZbxkMBTRvvo0mbWCqZohIwqLSXjWw3zoW9/s320/fuge_light.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
They are all GU10 LED bulbs from Chinese manufacturers and cost very little to get (with free postage) off of eBay. I'm still experimenting with lighting, and I'm still reading through the <a href="http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=267432" target="_blank">GU10 LED Build Thread</a> over at nano-reef.com, so before I finalise anything I think I'll post in the thread before manufacturing anything.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/"><span id="goog_1900598940"></span><img border="0" height="235" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEBzaccVJBOI_2R0ZtsQjEolJh8hxBk4egUz1ilreriQxeQ_HiHv05bQ2wxCnsLz1lNn_RwfZUkqJIEVSWVR1GcChTIQYDjX6hWS7wo1NC1GUrYGbNNVw2kX7zBcMazB8U3idqL5vrGobo/s320/IEC_socket.PNG" width="320" /><span id="goog_1900598941"></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'll be making a little cabinet for the fuge which will incorporate the hood, and also may be connected and incorporated into the AquaOne Cube 30 cabinet. As such I'm going to use the above IEC power socket (which I picked up of <a href="http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/130764740711" target="_blank">eBay</a> for under $3 w/ free postage) as the power interface.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">More to come as more gets done!</span></b></div>

<br />
Another day another tank... at least that's the way it seems to be working out! Although I had been stalking this tank for a about two weeks before I pulled the trigger and bought it xD It's an all glass aquarium, with curved front corners, and it a little over 43 Litres (or 11 Gallons for those that aren't metric). It'll be staying as it is, with very few moddifications to the tank.<br />
<br />
<b>Measurements:</b><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Length: 49 cm<br />
Width: 29 cm<br />
Height: 30.5 cm<br />
Glass Thickness: 5 mm</blockquote>
<b>Fish:</b><br />
<br />
I'll be using Hang-on-Back filters and skimmers so as to keep it at that 43 litres / 11 gallons. By doing so I'll be given the opportunity to keep a pair of anenomefish! Either:
<br />
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=15+2124+755&pcatid=755" target="_blank">Ocellaris Clownfish</a> (Amphiprion ocellaris) or </li>
<li><a href="http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=15+27+142&pcatid=142" target="_blank">Percula Clownfish</a> (Amphiprion percula)</li>
</ul>
<div>
And then I have room for one more little guy, so I'm deciding between one of these:</div>

The back of the tank will be painted a flat black in whatever I can find that will do the job as I'm yet to find Krylon for Plastic in Australia (at least not where I live), which will make the tank look good as well as hiding my filtration.</div>

Of late I have been bitten by the fish keeping bug (or should that be water keeping?) and have started a few freshwater tanks. That was until my LFS (local fish store) started getting ready to start stocking marine fish and related equipment. Well boy did that hit me hard!</div>

Well, a SketchUp model and a photo of the cube tank filled with water (to test if it held water, which it did). The tank is an AquaOne Cube 30 (30cm x 30cm x 30cm or 11.8" x 11.8" x 11.8") and is all glass. Un-modded it holds around 27 litres (or 7.13 U.S. gallons) and I expect the final volume of the DT once modded to be 18.2 litres (4.8 gallons). </span></div>

<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/hEqZp3JU3GU" width="560"></iframe>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So over the weekend Parker got her first taste of some proper training in relation to Schutzhund (I happened to be extremely lucky and bumped into a guy a couple weeks ago that has just moved to town and that was looking for some people to start a Schutzhund group. He's been in the sport and training dogs for 12 years). </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
One of the training aids he used were a pair of flirt poles, and since I'll be training her in-between training visits I needed a cheap and easy way of getting some poles quickly.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So I made some! They're easy to make, very repairable and work great. Everything you would need to know about making a pole is in the above video, if you wanted to make one.<br />
<br />
If you like it and feel like it please head on over to <a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/Making-a-Flirt-Pole/" target="_blank">instructables</a> and vote for my project.</div>

<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/aFgzbmRAS80" width="560"></iframe></div>
<br />
This is my new and first ever Bronze Corydoras (Corydoras aeneus)!<br />
<br />
I picked him (him just rolls off the tongue. I don't really know what sex he is) up last Friday, which was my 23rd birthday, and he seems to be doing well. He's getting TetraColor tropical flakes and Aqua One Vege Wafers every second day. They aren't the foods I want to be feeding him but until I can find a good retailer online it's what I have.<br />
<br />
He's breaking the tank in quite well and is all kinds of active. The pet store guy said after about a week I can think about adding another friend to the tank. Eventually he will have another Cory, a Bristlenose Catfish, two Platy's and a little tiny school of Neon Tetra's ^_^Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05668936809681675189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8582950046931132176.post-87804462681941149242012-09-06T06:57:00.000-07:002012-09-08T02:12:24.763-07:00The ArduQuarium ControllerSo, I posted on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/303426236419250" target="_blank">New England Maker Group</a>'s page about a device I am now working on that will eventually control every aspect of my soon to be built 115L freshwater tropical aquarium and 95L sump (although I'm thinking I may just make two 115 litre tanks for both the aquarium and sump).<br />
<br />
I call it the ArduQuarium Controller!<br />
<br />
The following you'll find the list of things that will make the controller up when it's done (or at least a partial list):<br />
<br />

<div class="p3">
Ballcock - Water level measurement</div>
<div class="p3">
<br />
I will probably end up with only three of those Atlas Scientific water quality sensors, as I won't any time soon be delving into marine (i.e: saltwater) tropicals, and the Mega can only accommodate three of them (but I will try and make it easy to swap a sensor out for another should the need arise in the future). The three sensors that are useful to me (pH, DO and ORP) will be housed in the return water chamber of my sump filter, along with one of the thermal probes, UV steriliser and the heating element. The other thermal probe with sit in the main aquarium and the Arduino will monitor the two and attempted to bring the sump temperature up if the aquarium needs more heat (I'm thinking of utilising a PID program, along with a schedular so as to get everything to work when it needs to).<br />
<br />
The relay control boards from SparkFun are there to make controlling the heating element, filter pumps, air pump and a water change pump much easier. The Arduino Mega's firmware will have provisions to initiate a partial water change based on data collected from its sensors and the ballcock will shut things off when it reaches a predetermined level.<br />
<br />
Although to start with I'll just be using a single relay controller and a thermal probe to control my current aquariums' heating element based on collected temperature readings to keep the tank a constant temperature.<br />
<br />
I will be making the aquarium out of glass instead of acrylic as this is my first DIY tank and a tube of silicon is easier for me as I'm familiar with it. The following are the aquariums figures (including GPH and filter media):</div>
<div class="p6">

This is all just a rather large experiment for me as I'm new to the hobby of aquaria. I will not be stocking this setup heavily, the aquarium will likely only have a small contingent of Corydoras in situ while the tank, sump and controller come together. Wish me luck!</div>

I now have a 21 litre Marine Master 'EziStart' freshwater aquarium. It measures 44.5cm (L) x 38cm (H) x 20cm (W) and weighs about 25 KG fully loaded.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B_1VA9uE2Yw/UEMrKimysxI/AAAAAAAAAoE/U7e7n08MI9U/s1600/2012+-+1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B_1VA9uE2Yw/UEMrKimysxI/AAAAAAAAAoE/U7e7n08MI9U/s400/2012+-+1" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span id="goog_804645689"></span><span id="goog_804645690"></span><span style="text-align: start;">It's very pretty at night.</span></div>
<br />
The kit, out of the box, comes with the tank, the light and the pump/filter. You need gravel, a pH kit, net, and plants (if you want) separately. You also need a heater for tropicals, so I also added a 25w aquarium heater to my setup (tropicals are the way to go, much cleaner).<br />
<br />
At the moment it's burning in for about a week, to get the water aged and settled, before I add in a little sacrificial Corydoras to really get the tank ecosystem going. They're hardy little fish, I've been told, so maybe he/she won't be so sacrificial in the end (which would be nice).<br />
<br />
After the aquarium is all set up and able to support life I'll add some nice fish that shouldn't die =D I'm also very aware that this may become addictive xDAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05668936809681675189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8582950046931132176.post-6901557034300466902012-08-28T19:37:00.002-07:002012-09-10T16:08:50.440-07:00Von Rakohund D Parker<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
Meet Parker (her full name being Von Rakohund D Parker) who is my new 10 week old purebred working line German Shepherd Dog. She is from the D litter of <a href="http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=710142" target="_blank">Von Forell Rako</a> x <a href="http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=557819" target="_blank">Paskarla Kolby</a> and was bred by Scott and Elaine Edwards of Von Rako Kennels, who breed and supply to the police and other law enforcement agencies as well as train them. Von Forell Rako, as the name suggests, was bred by Kris Kotsopoulos of <a href="http://vonforell.com/" target="_blank">Von Forell Kennels</a> who breed some beautiful dogs.<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
She is growing by the day and is already bigger than she is in the video, at nine weeks. She was born on the 18th of June 2012 and I first saw the litter when all the pups were six weeks old. Now, you don't pick the pup that you want. Nope, none of that "Pick the puppy that comes up to and licks your hand" stuff. The breeders, Scott and Elaine, pick a pup suited to what you want from it.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
In my case Parker is going to be somewhat of a personal protection dog, and hopefully a good contender in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schutzhund" target="_blank">Schutzhund</a>. She has a very good prey drive and is already beginning to become a quite solid dog.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
They are all registered with the Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC) on the limited register so as you can't breed from them with mongrels etc... and sell them with papers), through the respective State institution (Dogs NSW in my case).</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you are looking for a working line German Shepherd companion and protector I can highly recommend Von Rako Kennels.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7Z6fMNnrEO4fQIshvz3pkGLIAPfuSs_D4h3DNeoRiC5c4H3c81kl1AytmSlLFMN7tBIiOsxCW2I_MRKW87woAaKxxDyxAkhQwUzfkn7NdN56bznPqdD4yILHLZav0_mEg_3nPAv1dxvGs/s1600/V33-(550-x-310).png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7Z6fMNnrEO4fQIshvz3pkGLIAPfuSs_D4h3DNeoRiC5c4H3c81kl1AytmSlLFMN7tBIiOsxCW2I_MRKW87woAaKxxDyxAkhQwUzfkn7NdN56bznPqdD4yILHLZav0_mEg_3nPAv1dxvGs/s400/V33-(550-x-310).png" width="400" /></a></div>
It's an <a href="http://www.epson.com.au/products/scanner/perfectionv33.asp" target="_blank">EPSON Perfection V33</a> flat bed scanner. I picked her up from my local <a href="http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XP3233/epson-v33-photo-scanner" target="_blank">Dick Smith</a> (which is extremely different from the DickSmith's Electronics you remember from your childhood) store.<br />
<br />
The reason I got it? It works on my iMac and on OSX 10.7 (with a little hoop jumping) and I didn't have to wait a couple weeks for it to ship to me. It's only an A4 scanner (I would have rather of had a larger scanning area), and as I won't be using it on my Windows box I can't use the bundled Arcsoft® Scan-n-Stitch Deluxe package to seamlessly stitch larger image together. But apart from that I'm quite happy with this 4800 x 9600dpi scanner.<br />
<br />
It's image quality is good:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv4FHndFV3x1s_rp-Ryg4JIjGJ5GTYOfzDTGUIqjXnZuMBeKWwPP4PuJrGJ0QR__WjDEBb_DnBGDhNpnI3E3KpG1TDumltiy4_FSW9pI3L7jOybnjBskbNhQeO9eW2VBBIl6JbaBeJzuLT/s1600/img003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv4FHndFV3x1s_rp-Ryg4JIjGJ5GTYOfzDTGUIqjXnZuMBeKWwPP4PuJrGJ0QR__WjDEBb_DnBGDhNpnI3E3KpG1TDumltiy4_FSW9pI3L7jOybnjBskbNhQeO9eW2VBBIl6JbaBeJzuLT/s320/img003.jpg" width="220" /></a></div>
It's a page out of the 'EBS Bulletin 5: Earth-wall Construction, 3rd Edition', published by the Australia Government Publishing Service in 1982 (used as demonstration material only and in fair dealing... It was all I had close at hand that would show the scanners detail). As you can see the diagrams are crisp and <span style="background-color: white;">detailed as well as the text being perfectly legible, even when zoomed wight in.</span><br />
<br />
You can scan documents and create a single PDF out of the images, as well as using character recognition software to make documents searchable (Windows only option). This PDF creation feature is one of the reasons I got it. I plan to make copies of my design journals so as to preserve them =D<br />
<br />
I'll be using it to duplicate documents, designs made with pen and paper, and many other things I imagine.<br />

Now, as I said there is some hoop jumping to get it to work on Mac OSX 10.7 and up. The included CD is supposed to come with all you need to get it to work... Except it's not.<br />
<br />
The included application crashes when opened, sometimes even opening to a menu before crashing so as to get your hopes up. You will need to go to the American EPSON support page (not the Australian or New Zealand OSX 10.7 compatibility page as they have nothing on them):<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?oid=154806&infoType=Downloads&platform=OSF_M_X7" style="background-color: white;">http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?oid=154806&infoType=Downloads&platform=OSF_M_X7</a><br />
<br />
Where you will find downloads for the EPSON scan utility & driver package, the event manager (to assign actions to scanner button pushes) and the ICA scanner driver for Apple's Image Capture utility. All of these work and the drivers update through Apple perfectly.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05668936809681675189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8582950046931132176.post-6403859490450427502012-07-26T08:24:00.000-07:002012-07-26T08:24:10.831-07:00Texas Instruments and Sample KitsOne of the good things about Hack a Day is that they usually let you know about good and free stuff if they find out about any. Or an update on the ATtiny 45/85 development board.I've been working on an ATtiny 45/85 dev board for a while now. It went from it's infancy of no external power input to being a toddler and using an FTDI cable to supply the 5v needed. Now it's a teenager and has on-board power with 5v regulation:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRf3Y5Z7_S9WXo2a3n1z4dRCCjGTVG2VIIvl2MNClQrgay7_qDR1K6Ht7-EcjvQWdhjIRBYQpZFQvaHIG6Y_Xcv6IHrShSZSkHjAW-LGzjRslV5dpuLONxDdZNCpHAs2stih2FtjtVUoHE/s1600/ATtiny_45_85_development_board_with_power_reg.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRf3Y5Z7_S9WXo2a3n1z4dRCCjGTVG2VIIvl2MNClQrgay7_qDR1K6Ht7-EcjvQWdhjIRBYQpZFQvaHIG6Y_Xcv6IHrShSZSkHjAW-LGzjRslV5dpuLONxDdZNCpHAs2stih2FtjtVUoHE/s640/ATtiny_45_85_development_board_with_power_reg.png" width="467" /></a></div>
<br />
It's the third revision of the board I've done, and it's also the largest of them. Still, it's not too expensive from OSH Park or BatchPCB. It now has a power jack and 5v power regulation (should be able to plug that Arduino power adaptor in and get her to fly) circuitry, ISP header, reset switch and two sets of broken out headers. The two sets of headers do serve a purpose. The first and inner set are for 'shields', while the second, outer, set is for both breadboard use and to give access to any unused pins that a 'shield' may not be using. It doesn't have an external crystal etc... as it shouldn't need one (as far as I understand), but the next revision will likely include a ceramic resonator, or at least be able to plug one in if wanted.<br />
<br />
The board came from the want and need for an easy to use board for the ATtiny 45 and 85 (mainly the 85) that included all I would need to use it to make a Toaster Reflow Oven, but also be viable for use with other projects.<br />
<br />
To further this idea of ease of use I designed an AD595 K-type thermocouple amplifier 'shield' for the dev board:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs0bu8otAVnHYryF3m6sikPcq1eMdqEtAQnwVaEHx646piWhcS8huedmFxTiZvzQDM_BQ4M3YwsG8ppltaj9ANDISR-pr73yYUvl5sWMuDL43BIQOLFV4HJjiBLCHnSp3oPtcrWJzbT68g/s1600/AD595_thermocouple_breakout_board-rev2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs0bu8otAVnHYryF3m6sikPcq1eMdqEtAQnwVaEHx646piWhcS8huedmFxTiZvzQDM_BQ4M3YwsG8ppltaj9ANDISR-pr73yYUvl5sWMuDL43BIQOLFV4HJjiBLCHnSp3oPtcrWJzbT68g/s640/AD595_thermocouple_breakout_board-rev2.png" width="466" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the second revision of the breakout board. It started life as something very basic, with the bare minimum for what I needed... I also cocked up my first prototypes. The thermocouple solder pads (which aid in getting better readings) were not accessible to solder to. So in this version I rectified this, in a very ugly way. But it works.<br />
<br />
This revision also has an alarm LED, which will alert you if a thermocouple isn't connected or if the chip is damaged in some way. I also now use a 3-pin screw terminal to connect to the relay board I will be using (<a href="http://www.sparkfun.com/wish_lists/36307">http://www.sparkfun.com/wish_lists/36307</a>).<br />
<br />
The AD595 is rather useful as you only need one pin on the microcontroller side of things and it's dead easy to work out the temperature:<br />
<blockquote>
<h3>
<span class="mw-headline">Signal Values</span></h3>
<div style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-top: 0.4em;">
The nice thing about the AD595 is that the signal it generates is linear with temperature. This means that it is really easy to convert from an analog reading to a real temperature. Secondly, the AD595 outputs 10mV/C which is simple to work with. at 1V, the temperature is 100C, at 2V, the temperature is 200C, etc. With a reference voltage of 5V, the sensor can make readings up to 500C.</div>
<div style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-top: 0.4em;">
The way to read the temperature is easy. First you convert an analog reading to voltage, then you multiply by 100 to get the temperature in celsius:</div>
<div style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-top: 0.4em;">
Voltage = analogRead(X) * 5.0 / 1024.0; //Note that 5.0 is the A/D reference voltage. Celsius = Voltage * 100;</div>
<div style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-top: 0.4em;">
Or, to simplify:</div>
<div style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-top: 0.4em;">
Celsius = ( 5.0 * analogRead(X) * 100.0) / 1024.0;
</div>
</blockquote>
<blockquote>
<div style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-top: 0.4em;">
-<span style="background-color: white;">- Taken from <a href="http://reprap.org/wiki/Thermocouple_Sensor_1.0#Signal_Values">http://reprap.org/wiki/Thermocouple_Sensor_1.0#Signal_Values</a></span></div>
</blockquote>
It does mean that the breakout board can only output up to 500°C since it only has 5v to work with, but we don't need to go higher than that for a reflow oven (I imagine it wouldn't be hard to bring the 9v from the power adaptor up to the AD595 to give it a 900<span style="background-color: white;">°C working range</span><span style="background-color: white;">). I'm going to be using the firmware from the Pleasant Hardware reflow controller (<a href="http://pleasantsoftware.com/developer/3d/reflow/">http://pleasantsoftware.com/developer/3d/reflow/</a>) as the basis for my code. He managed to get full PID controlled temperature management, 3 'programs' and a minimalistic UI into the limited memory of the ATtiny 45!</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;">Anyway, this is just an update of what's been happening with the dev board. More to come about the reflow oven!</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05668936809681675189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8582950046931132176.post-69321221311381062412012-07-19T06:27:00.000-07:002012-07-19T06:27:00.301-07:00The ArduFrauenfelderCNC Version 1.0 - Arduino Pro Micro Edition!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This is the Version 1.0 of the ArduFrauenfelderCNC controller board... Arduino Pro Micro Edition. It's my way of cheating, until I can get the pre-release board completely perfect.<br />
<br />
I also like this design as you don't need to add a clumsy FTDI board into the mix, as the ATmega32U4 has a USB transceiver inside of the 32U4. I may have to get my reflow oven project completed and look at SMD components for the controller (as a side project).<br />
<br />
Thought I'd just make an update with what's happened (I did say I would be updating more often).Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05668936809681675189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8582950046931132176.post-36033981540071201982012-07-14T22:58:00.001-07:002012-07-14T22:58:32.889-07:00The ArduFrauenfelderCNC: Progress Report 1<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;">

<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;">This is the ArduFrauenfelderCNC so far!</span><br />
<br />
It hasn't really changed that much since I last showed it off. The gantry has been modified to allow linear bearings to be fitted and 10mm steel rods to be fitted for Z-axis motion, as well as support structures for the lead ballscrew.<br />
<br />
The base unit hasn't yet been modified for actual use. It needs parts for the lead screw support and stepper motor placement (which will be 3D printed to allow varying motors to be used).<br />
<br />
Talking of 3D printing I have also designed printed structures for the controller board holder (top left image), as well as the Z-axis linear bearing manifold (centre image, last item in image). I haven't decided on a dremel, or cousin, for use as the drill yet so the Z-axis isn't quite right yet. Once I do pick one I'll get it ready for cutting, more than likely having to modify dimensions to get the unit right for an actual drill.<br />
<br />
I'm going to do a test run of the physical mill once I have to all laid out in SketchUp the way I want it (that is I'll take the incomplete mill and send it to be cut at Ponoko so as to see if it's working as designed).<br />
<br />
So the reason I got a bee in my bonnet? That would be thanks to <a href="http://letsmakerobots.com/user/24" target="_blank">Chris the Carpenter</a> at <a href="https://sites.google.com/a/rocketbrandstudios.com/rocket-brand-studios/" target="_blank">Rocket Brand Studios</a>. I stumbled across his magnificent propeller-based TX for his robots last year and a couple weeks ago re-stumbled it (I really love that thing). Once I found the page about it I started looking at his blog posts and found a video of him milling lexan for a 3D printer. He just really inspired me again to get my arse in gear and get my baby finished. To which I would have to thank him!<br />
<br />
I'll continue to get the mill up to speed in the coming months and post as I make progress.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05668936809681675189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8582950046931132176.post-20420960080801270342012-07-13T23:32:00.000-07:002012-07-13T23:32:03.148-07:00Xperia™ SmartTags and the Samsung Galaxy SIII<br />
As I've stated before I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy SIII GT-I9300 from MobiCity. Now, one of the neat things it has is a Near Field Communication chip and antenna built into it. <span style="background-color: white;">What, I hear you ask, can this be used for? Well, there's Google Wallet (US only) and Android & S Beam, but the thing that interests me, and probably you, is it's interactions with NFC tags.</span><br />
<br />

Below is a screencap of the SmartTag app once your tags are registered, as well as a screencap of the tag edit menu where you add or remove actions that tag will do. The bottom image is a popup notification that happens when a cards actions are being taken:</span><br />

You can of course change the names of the tags from the factory settings. The tags can perform many tasks, such as toggling Bluetooth on and off, play and audio file, send a text message or make a call. All this it can do, except for anything to do with turning GPS on and off (which would be nice if an update were to include it. Imagine having a car tag that turned Bluetooth on, GPS on, opened a navigation app and adjusted the volume). </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
As for the LiveWare™<span style="background-color: white;"> Manager app you'll find it kinda neat, but somewhat </span><span style="background-color: white;">useless (Microsoft's </span><a href="http://www.onx.ms/" style="background-color: white;" target="_blank">on{x}</a><span style="background-color: white;"> is way more </span><span style="background-color: white;">useful</span><span style="background-color: white;"> and powerful. But you have to have LiveWare to use the tags)</span><span style="background-color: white;">. It will allow you to enact actions based on certain changes the phone detects, such as plugging the charger in or pushing a pair of headphones into the audio socket As you can see from the second image I have the Bloomberg app open and show me my stock listings when I charge my phone:</span></div>

I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy SIII GT-I9300 in the 32 GB variety from MobiCity. My only problem is that I'm upgrading from a three year old iPhone 3GS which uses a regular, old and large SIM card, whereas the SIII uses the new and fangled microSIM.<br />

<br />
I decided to buy a throw away, $2 starter SIM to experiment on before trying to cut my actual phone SIM:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOwhSAALE7N7RUznFCt3IwScSuk-qzXHB6lNiYfFBLUy1uyke9VYr8d0vuWzMczu18fh8NBOr_TjTEEnAFzVzQCamDMKlu1yxNNqm5AeuW7le9Z43lEr4OOE_3uz6Dbo2eFPEMO1VW2uQe/s1600/2012-07-03+15.28.19.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOwhSAALE7N7RUznFCt3IwScSuk-qzXHB6lNiYfFBLUy1uyke9VYr8d0vuWzMczu18fh8NBOr_TjTEEnAFzVzQCamDMKlu1yxNNqm5AeuW7le9Z43lEr4OOE_3uz6Dbo2eFPEMO1VW2uQe/s320/2012-07-03+15.28.19.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
You place the normal sized SIM card into the cutter, which is rather similar to a regular hole punch, and depress the lever with a steady amount of force until it pushes out a microSIM sized piece of smartcard plastic:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjebBlJ17pL5wsglBkyMkOwHZg1zyGGCCPQRxgsEejbiocsE0EPGZ2V3lHWzrLm1H4NNRGUngFYduBsf23OYkIqk7Na3eBZFeZUCUQ7lPqwFAWWEEd2CGMRwNK432mPGdHBedp3ndW2IdGR/s1600/2012-07-03+15.29.18.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjebBlJ17pL5wsglBkyMkOwHZg1zyGGCCPQRxgsEejbiocsE0EPGZ2V3lHWzrLm1H4NNRGUngFYduBsf23OYkIqk7Na3eBZFeZUCUQ7lPqwFAWWEEd2CGMRwNK432mPGdHBedp3ndW2IdGR/s320/2012-07-03+15.29.18.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The cutter came with a couple adaptors so if you so choose you can use it in a regular phone again. It does make the card quite small:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuOIQs-cvStE2S6kUSDvwbrwngtWhH8vTYsASPm7jMK5st4kyjnq6FhuSXTfFTEiUlweAjqJsl5Ygq9CaYhmocHVmmDkpk5ljtuC7hqJlfc0gdaAFETysdjUMSQretZRhXMuNQNNu_bKH-/s1600/2012-07-03+15.41.45.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuOIQs-cvStE2S6kUSDvwbrwngtWhH8vTYsASPm7jMK5st4kyjnq6FhuSXTfFTEiUlweAjqJsl5Ygq9CaYhmocHVmmDkpk5ljtuC7hqJlfc0gdaAFETysdjUMSQretZRhXMuNQNNu_bKH-/s320/2012-07-03+15.41.45.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Now I say "except not really" because my actual real life SIM is too big, as in the contact pads, to use in the cutter. Or at least I'd rather not risk it:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCOPabBM8-lqQ6zMwKBkwQsBEIGadBQwTyHS8skL2aq8qZw1Vj7Yo-2R3-fKo8hV3nnEYwpaoMEp3WpI4jkicMf60iHThrtGa3v96JAXLJ4awwYvVymJHBURtYs_SCYbVojqFR_923Kup6/s1600/2012-07-03+15.43.53-vf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="159" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCOPabBM8-lqQ6zMwKBkwQsBEIGadBQwTyHS8skL2aq8qZw1Vj7Yo-2R3-fKo8hV3nnEYwpaoMEp3WpI4jkicMf60iHThrtGa3v96JAXLJ4awwYvVymJHBURtYs_SCYbVojqFR_923Kup6/s320/2012-07-03+15.43.53-vf.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
On the left is my normal sized SIM card, on the right</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
is the freshly cut microSIM in an adaptor.</div>
<br />
I'm pretty sure I could cut my proper SIM and have it be fine and functional, but first I'm going to go down to my local Telstra store and have a talk to them (which is something I never really like doing) about my problem.<br />
<br />
<u><b>UPDATE:</b></u> I found a same sized SIM as my actual one and tried to cut it. As long as you manually align the card in the cutout window so none of the chip is in the line of the cut it works beautifully.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I am ever so slightly annoyed at having to have the www. of my address included for this to work, but it's a small price to pay.<br />
<br />
It's registered with GoDaddy and they make it so very easy to achieve so I thought why not, since my hosting plan is now defunct and the domain just pointed at a 403 message now.<br />
<br />
Go <a href="http://support.godaddy.com/help/article/5112/mapping-your-domain-name-to-work-with-blogger" target="_blank">here</a> for instructions on how to achieve this.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05668936809681675189noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8582950046931132176.post-11661845484398757172012-07-01T06:00:00.001-07:002012-07-01T06:29:58.665-07:00iMac CaddieI own an iMac, mid 2011 model, and as it currently stands it sits low on my desk as well as sitting far to forward for my liking (because if I were to push it back into the monitor alcove then I wouldn't be able to use the DVD/CD drive).<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Last week I got sick of my setup and started designing what I call a caddie:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyf015Wqhp9egrKfhoyaaldhEgHZUsQjnr2JzPBVG79CxE1bwo1PMUmI-0pJcQw1LxYDkuHgzYbUsoLzZPBEaFu9AEVRQxmX3hVIRkE1R3YOLbIwoEoayg3j7W9IyLUp4P0Q7msn_QTC5b/s1600/Screen+Shot+2012-07-01+at+11.05.31+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="207" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyf015Wqhp9egrKfhoyaaldhEgHZUsQjnr2JzPBVG79CxE1bwo1PMUmI-0pJcQw1LxYDkuHgzYbUsoLzZPBEaFu9AEVRQxmX3hVIRkE1R3YOLbIwoEoayg3j7W9IyLUp4P0Q7msn_QTC5b/s320/Screen+Shot+2012-07-01+at+11.05.31+PM.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqF2Yi2F3GGam8_fTrM0a_BJLdpypr4zZSNTgqymgbO8sw2OZnUBoiOD19vY1JKFQl8OeFo0l7XwfS_32pkCvX5OpttM56f_JqWJP2aI9pPyQQDskNTBInYC1mdDdlrrQzApGPWxLkik-5/s1600/Screen+Shot+2012-07-01+at+11.06.04+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="128" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqF2Yi2F3GGam8_fTrM0a_BJLdpypr4zZSNTgqymgbO8sw2OZnUBoiOD19vY1JKFQl8OeFo0l7XwfS_32pkCvX5OpttM56f_JqWJP2aI9pPyQQDskNTBInYC1mdDdlrrQzApGPWxLkik-5/s320/Screen+Shot+2012-07-01+at+11.06.04+PM.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
It will be made from MDF and clad in plywood of some description. The iMac foot holder (the raised part) is made entirely from plywood and is just there to make it look neat.
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
There will be room for five HDD's inside and a USB hub (as well as a Firewire hub hopefully) with easy to access cutouts. The whole unit will be connected to two or three draw sliders to make it easy to get access to the DVD/CD drive. I'm also contemplating placing NFC tags in there somewhere too so I can place my Galaxy S3 on it and have it do stuff.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It's a massive work in progress, I'm not even sure if I'll go to my local hardware store to get the materials or whether I should just go with Ponoko, but I thought I'd throw it out here anyway.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Well, unless you've been living under a rock on a far away island recently then you would have heard about a Kickstarter campaign for the <a href="http://www.getpebble.com/" target="_blank">Pebble</a> smartwatch!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It's a wristwatch that runs an ARM Cortex-M3 microcontroller, a 3-axis accelerometer, Bluetooth and an e-ink display. It can run apps and comes with an iPhone and Android app that loads apps to the watch. It'll be able to show incoming calls, new SMS's (Android only), email notifications, as well as having an SDK so you can write your own apps to do whatever you want!<br />
<br />
It's a remarkable product. In the first 28 hours it raised over a million dollars! That's a single bloody day! At the time of writing this it's up to 33,989 backers and is sitting on $4,901,024 in pledges (me included =3). It's officially the highest funded Kickstarter campaign, ever, which is incredible since it still has 29 days to go.<br />
<br />
I'm buying a new Android phone for my watch xD A nice shinny new Samsung Galaxy Nexus, just so I can get the full Pebble experience.<br />
<br />
I hope you find it in your heart, and wallet, to back this project even though it doesn't need it simply because it's awesome.<br />
